INTRODUCING JJ CLARKE

19th Sept - 29th Oct

Íontas Arts are proud to present a programme of work celebrating the life & photography of Castleblayney native Dr JJ (Jack) Clarke. As well as hosting an exhibition of Jack Clarkes photography two specially devised theatre productions based on Clarke and his photography, will be performed.

The JJ Clarke collection is considered to be among the finest examples of early street photography and a superb document of Edwardian Ireland. Taken in the first decade of the 20th Century, these candid photographs capture the ebb and flow of everyday life, a significant departure in photography at that time. Motor cars, parades, seaside activity, doctors, pedestrians, women and children, Jack Clarkes photography teems with activity exuding warmth and compassion for his subjects. The photographs on display are taken from the Clarke Collection donated to the National Library in 2000 by Brian Clarke.

‘Clarke Photographic Collection, Courtesy The National Library of Ireland’.

This project is supported by the Creative Ireland Programme and Monaghan County Council.
