 'Lost Paradise' by Leonard Graham

Monday 22nd June - Thursday 30th July 2015

The origin for this exhibition comes from an interest in the famous and epic poem Paradise Lost by John Milton. The work that I have created for this exhibition is loosely based on the early stages and passages of this prolific poem.

I have chosen to work in oils for this show. My approach is to use the paint in a fluid and loose manner. Creating a certain atmosphere that is conducive to my interpretation of the poem. I am creating a place of transition. A place of metamorphism. As I see it there isn’t much use for colour so I have chosen to keep the palette simple and the paintings dark and ominous. Occasionally there are moments of light and I try and show this in certain pieces. Perhaps I am using light and dark as metaphors for emotion.

Examining these dark spiritual themes is always interesting to me. Having always fascinated over religious beliefs and attitudes this was a really enjoyable body of work to have made. The overall theme isn’t too perplexing to understand. The subject matter is something we are all familiar with. Good and evil, right and wrong, temptation and self-discipline. Universal themes we still use and struggle with today.
